This committee assists high school students who are interested in attending a particular vocational program. Scholarships of up to $2000 over a two year period are available. We provide these scholarships for students at the DPS Community Education Center, CEC, a magnet school for student interested in vocational training. Working with the teaching staff at CEC we have been able to double the number of student scholarship applicants and awards. We have also given small, short term grants to students that are administered by the classroom teacher. We are working to be sure that Denver Kids who attend CEC are aware of these scholarhip opportunities. In January, we go into classrooms to present our program to the students. The application process includes teacher recommendations and an interview. Selection is made in the spring for fall programs. Volunteers on this committee select scholarship recipients.
Students receiving grants this year are studying in community colleges and vocational and apprenticeship programs in areas such as deisel tech, pharmacy, architectural drafting construction and fashion design. Almost without exception, if they enroll, they are successful and continue, some even go on to a four year college.
A mentoring program has also been set up for the scholarship recipients, paring each with a Rotarian on the committee and/or mentor who is familiar with the trade or technical field that the student is pursuing in school.
