KEYNOTE SPEAKER…

“The Great Surge: The Ascent of the Developing World” Steven Radelet, Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development, Georgetown University

While the headlines suggest that the world is falling apart, the news is not all bleak. In fact, we live at a time of the greatest progress among the global poor in human history. During the last 25 years there has been more progress than ever before in the world’s poorest countries in reducing poverty, improving health, increasing incomes, expanding education, reducing conflict, and encouraging democracy. These gains provide huge new opportunities, but also great challenges for the world as a whole, and for the United States. The Great Surge tells the story of this unprecedented progress over the last two decades, why it happened (including the contributions of Rotary Clubs around the world), and whether it can continue into the future.
