The Rotary International Programs Committee is responsible for several exciting programs sponsored by RI. They include Ambassadorial Scholarships, Peace and Conflict Studies Programs, the Temple Buell Scholarship and Group Study Exchanges.
Rotary International has several of the most impressive scholarship programs in the U.S. District 5450, which encompasses 65 Rotary clubs in Colorado, provides this opportunity to several graduate level students selected from the District.
The focus of the Scholarship Sub-Committee is, first, to increase awareness of the Rotary scholarship opportunities among Rotarians and the community in general and, second, to find outstanding students to nominate.
The final selections are made by District 5450 based on student grades, achievements, community involvement, future leadership potential and financial need. Rotarians believe that if one person at a time can understand we live in a world of differences, we will ultimately develop people who will understand and be able to work toward a better world of understanding, goodwill and peace.
The programs, which these scholars can participate in, include the Ambassadorial Scholarship for single-year or multi-year academic programs. For the Temple Buell Scholarship, the course of study is limited to architecture (land planning, urban planning, landscape and design). The World Peace and Conflict Studies scholarships are available to professionals from around the world to train in the areas of conflict resolution and mediation strategies.
This program supports Rotary groups for young professionals, aged 18 to 25 years. Currently the club does not support a Rotaract Club.
The Group Study Exchange Program is financed by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) of Rotary International. It is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young, non-Rotarian, professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 years. The program awards “all expense” paid grants for a team of 4 plus a Rotarian leader, from paired Districts in different countries, to visit the exchange country for four weeks. Rotarian members from several local clubs then host and plan the team itinerary to visit business, educational, governmental and cultural places as well as include social time with Rotary members.
Our GSE committee will recruit young professionals who fit the requirements of the program and the particular outgoing team, as determined by the District, and help coordinate the incoming team’s hosting and itinerary should our Club be chosen to be involved. With 65 clubs in our District, only 5 clubs are chosen to host but all can recruit applicants and meet the incoming teams at our District Conference.
In 2010-2011, our District is sending a team focused on agriculture to Kerala, India, February 2011. Team leader and member applications are due September 1 and Oct. 1. All must be available for District interviews at set times. The incoming team will visit in April 2011. A second inbound team with mixed professions will visit from San Paulo in April 2011. Our District team will visit Brazil in 2012.
In 2009/2010, one team focused in renewable energy traveled to Japan, and another general exchange team went to Southern Peru. In the spring of 2009, our Club hosted a focused group from New Zealand.
The GSE Sub-Committee meets as needed.
