INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Overview
The Rotary Club of Denver (Club 31) has a long tradition of international service and dedication to the global community. We believe wholeheartedly in Rotary’s long tradition of fostering peace and international understanding through education. Since 1947, Rotary International has given more than 41,000 students the opportunity to learn from and impact the world as Rotary Ambassadors of Goodwill and Rotary Peace Fellows. Our local Rotary District additionally benefits from a Temple Buell Scholarship – funded by an endowment from one of our own local Rotarians to support international study of architecture, landscape design and urban planning. All students and professionals are encouraged to apply – if you have questions about your eligibility, please contact Rotarian Lucas Hartley at the contact information below. More information about RI’s educational programs can be found on Rotary International’s website by clicking here.
Ambassadorial Scholarships – 2013-2014
Last year was the final year of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship program as administered by Rotary International (RI) over the last 60+ years. As part of RI’s “future vision” program, local Rotary districts will have more control and discretion over the administration of scholarship funds. Our district had a strong commitment to international exchange and scholarships and is committed to continuing international scholarships under “future vision”, however, the precise number and nature of such scholarships is still being determined. We expect that there will be at least one scholarship similar to the former Ambassadorial Scholarship available for study in the 2013-2014 academic year, and a decision as to the details of this scholarship opportunity will be made early in 2012. Interviews at the district level are anticipated to be held over the summer of 2012 for this scholarship. We will be accepting applications at the Denver Rotary Club (Club 31) through early March 2012 with interviews scheduled for late March-early April. If you are interested in receiving more information please contact Rotarian Lucas Hartley (lucas.hartley@gmail.com) – and we will be happy to keep you abreast as the 2013-2014 scholarship process crystalizes.
Temple Buell Scholarship – 2013-2014
Thanks to a very generous endowment established by one of Club 31’s very own Rotarians, our Rotary district is offering one scholarship for 2013-2014 in an amount yet to be determined (ranging from $27,000-$30,000) to support the international study of architecture, landscape design, urban planning or other related fields. Similar to the Ambassadorial Scholarships, candidates will be expected to participate regularly in Rotary activities both here in Colorado and in their study country, and we will be looking for candidates who exemplify the ideals and values of Rotary International.
Rotary Peace Fellows (Two-year and 3-Month Fellowships) – 2013-2015
Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities. Fellows can earn either (a) a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or (b) a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution. Details regarding the two types of Peace Fellowships (including application materials) can be found by clicking here. Our district is required to submit applications to the Rotary Foundation for final review and selection on or before July 1, 2012, and our club is accepting applications for Rotary Peace Fellows through April 2012. If you are interested in receiving more information please contact Rotarian Lucas Hartley (lucas.hartley@gmail.com) – and we will be happy to provide additional details regarding the fellowships and the process.

This program supports Rotary groups for young professionals, aged 18 to 25 years. Currently the club does not support a Rotaract Club.
The Group Study Exchange Program is financed by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) of Rotary International. It is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young, non-Rotarian, professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 years. The program awards “all expense” paid grants for a team of 4 plus a Rotarian leader, from paired Districts in different countries, to visit the exchange country for four weeks. Rotarian members from several local clubs then host and plan the team itinerary to visit business, educational, governmental and cultural places as well as include social time with Rotary members.
Our GSE committee will recruit young professionals who fit the requirements of the program and the particular outgoing team, as determined by the District, and help coordinate the incoming team’s hosting and itinerary should our Club be chosen to be involved. With 65 clubs in our District, only 5 clubs are chosen to host but all can recruit applicants and meet the incoming teams at our District Conference.
In 2010-2011, our District is sending a team focused on agriculture to Kerala, India, February 2011. Team leader and member applications are due September 1 and Oct. 1. All must be available for District interviews at set times. The incoming team will visit in April 2011. A second inbound team with mixed professions will visit from San Paulo in April 2011. Our District team will visit Brazil in 2012.
In 2009/2010, one team focused in renewable energy traveled to Japan, and another general exchange team went to Southern Peru. In the spring of 2009, our Club hosted a focused group from New Zealand.
The GSE Sub-Committee meets as needed.
